Chester the Penguin
Chester dropped into our home one Christmas Eve.
He’s now camped on the couch and refuses to leave.
Like a worn-out old uncle, I allow him to stay.
When things get confusing, Chester now has a say.
Chester likes our cage cold and cranks the air,
and when the heat comes on, he gives an evil stare.
Even though he’s grouchy and sits around for days,
the old bird provides strength in unusual ways.
Chester gives me hope when situations are dark.
“Stop complaining, move on,” his imaginary remark.
I consult my protector when there’s trouble in the street.
Chester knows when it’s time to start packing heat.
Under the collar, he gets justifiably hot
as ice under his kins’ feet begins to rot.
Keep the penguins happy, help these emperors rule,
and listen to Chester— “Always stay cool!”
