Blood Drive Story

Poem Thumbnail

People still need blood, especially when fewer are giving.
Blood donors literally help to keep another person living.
I used to donate blood to people who must have it.
Somehow over the years, I got out of the habit.

Draining a pint now and then is good for the body.
As a bonus, one might provide a virus antibody.
Giving blood feels good. Yes, that’s my own horn tootin’.
My favorite part is afterwards when I get a Fig Newton.

I made an appointment to donate, but I’ve never understood
Why anybody would want my cranky old blood.
The date is set, yes, I’m doing it this time,
Then I’ll write all about it later, maybe in rhyme.

Oh no! I just got an email; the blood drive was called off.
Perhaps somebody came in with a fever or cough.
I’ll try to donate next time the local Red Cross has a drive.
Until then, Dear Reader, shelter on, and do your best to survive.
