The Nameless Tortoise

Poem Thumbnail

She’s big and black, and looks a fright,
with menacing eyes and mouth ‘bout to bite.
Long claws up front, spikes on the back;
she’s loaded for prey and ready for attack!
This tortious has a shell like no other
  made entirely from recycled rubber.
Alex Zamisen wove it, swath by swath
creating this armor from vulcanized cloth.
She’s built for the long haul,
and will never crawl an inch.
Requires nothing for subsistence
  and scowls without a flinch.
Like a foggy page from science fiction,
she’s a living study in contradiction.
Smooth, spiky, bumpy; soft, hard.
inviting people on, while standing guard.

She’s young but feels old and worn-out

and waits patiently for that name she’s without.

Whether you’re riding this marvelous creature for the first time, or seeing it for free-
Gander a second glance, and remember how deceiving looks can be.
